While Australia was flying high in the first week of competition, hot on the heels of both China and the USA thanks to some stunning performances in the pool, a far slower second week saw the Aussies slip down the order to settle behind fifth-placed Russia.<\/p>\n
Australia's 17 golds in a total of 46 medals is their second-best showing at a Games behind Athens 2004 where the Aussies took home 17 gold in a total of 50.<\/p>\n
It's a bold showing from a nation of 25 million, beating out the likes of global sporting heavyweights France, Netherlands, Germany and Canada.<\/p>\n

Swimmer Emma McKeon was Australia's most successful athlete in Tokyo, taking home a whopping seven medals (four gold, three bronze) to make her the nation's most decorated Olympian ever.<\/p>\n
McKeon also claimed more medals in Tokyo than any other athlete – she was, however, beaten in the solo gold medal count by USA swimmer Caleb Dressel.<\/p>\n
