Former Wallaby Peter FitzSimons has slammed the misbehaviour of the Australian men's rugby sevens Olympic team<\/a> while Drew Mitchell accused them of "not reading the room".<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Rugby Australia reprimanded the team for "unacceptable behaviour" on their flight home from the Tokyo Games. In a statement, RA said an investigation found that "excessive amounts of alcohol" was consumed by some team members and there was also damage to accommodation in the Tokyo Olympic Village.<\/p>\n

RA launched the investigation<\/a> after the Australian Olympic Committee informed them of "incidents involving the Australian men's sevens program."<\/p>\n

Japan Airlines also wrote to the AOC to complain about alcohol-fuelled bad behaviour on their flight.<\/p>\n

"I was desperately disappointed by the rugby sevens. In my day they had 'NTA – never tour again'," FitzSimons said on Nine's Sports Sunday.<\/em><\/p>\n

"What are you thinking? When the flight attendant says, 'Sit down and shut up', you sit down and shut up."<\/p>\n

Mitchell criticised the team for their arrogance considering the strict lockdown many in Australia are experiencing and with so many still stuck overseas.<\/p>\n

"I think it's a case of…read the room. They've been afforded the luxury to go over and represent our country in Tokyo while we're all in lockdown, and come back, and to represent themselves in such a way is disappointing," he said.<\/p>\n

"To throw it in our face by acting like that is pretty disappointing."<\/p>\n

Legendary surfer and former Athletes' Liaison at the London Games Layne Beachley attempted to explain why they may have misbehaved.<\/p>\n

"To see the pressure valve come off, it's hard to be rational sometimes because they've invested so much and been so locked in and then to be afforded that little bit of freedom and a little drink," she began.<\/p>\n

"I understand every athlete needs to be disciplined and have focused and respect the rules, but sometimes it can slip out of hand."<\/p>\n
