Iran's Sajad Ganjzadeh won the Olympic gold medal in men's over-75kg karate – despite being knocked unconscious. <\/p>\n

Final opponent Tareg Hamedi was given a disqualification penalty for kicking Ganjzadeh hard in the upper body or head. He nailed his opponent flush on the jaw with his left foot.<\/p>\n

Hamedi initially celebrated but the mood in the arena quickly soured. Ganjzadeh was given oxygen and taken out on a stretcher with his neck stabilised.<\/p>\n

Kumite is meant to be sparring aimed at scoring points and Hamedi was deemed to have struck Ganjzadeh too forcefully; an unchecked attack contrary to the rules, meaning that he lost gold to the man who he demolished.<\/p>\n

"I'm happy about the gold medal but I'm sad that I had to win it like this," Ganjzadeh said.<\/p>\n

Hamedi, who left the mat in tears, still won Saudi Arabia's second-ever silver medal, but missed out on its first gold. He was leading the match 4-1 before his disqualification.<\/p>\n

He later said that he was unhappy with the judge's decision but satisfied with how he fought. He and Ganjzadeh appeared together at the medal ceremony, relatively expressionless given what occurred.<\/p>\n

Adding to Hamedi's pain, karate will not be contested at the next Olympics; meaning he will have no chance at redemption.<\/p>\n

Hamedi overcame Japan's Ryutaro Araga in the semi-finals. Araga's bronze surprisingly was the host nation's only kumite medal in Tokyo. <\/p>\n
