{"id":113383,"date":"2021-08-07T23:34:29","date_gmt":"2021-08-07T23:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=113383"},"modified":"2021-08-07T23:57:08","modified_gmt":"2021-08-07T23:57:08","slug":"army-officers-epic-road-to-ending-121-year-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=113383","title":{"rendered":"Army officer&#039;s epic road to ending 121-year drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Neeraj Chopra held a corner of the India flag in each hand and raised it over his head.<\/p>\n<p>A half-hour later, the tri-colour was flying at the top of the mast at Tokyo&#x27;s Olympic Stadium and Chopra was standing atop the medal podium, feeling on top of the world.<\/p>\n<p>A first gold medal in Olympic track and field for a nation of 1.3 billion, its first in any sports since a shooting title in 2008, had to be cause for celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Chopra won the javelin title at the Tokyo Games with a personal-best throw of 87.58 metres on Saturday night, securing the title with a throw to spare.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It feels unbelievable,&quot; he said. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is our first Olympic medal for a very long time, and in athletics it is the first time we have gold, so it&#x27;s a proud moment for me and my country.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"20976156-61b5-40b9-a6dd-a07ef61d8f8d\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/20976156-61b5-40b9-a6dd-a07ef61d8f8d\" alt=\"Neeraj Chopra of Team India competes in the Men&#x27;s Javelin Throw Final \" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>India&#x27;s only previous medals in Olympic track and field were two silvers won by Norman Pritchard in the 200 metres and the 200-metre hurdles at Paris in 1900.<\/p>\n<p>Historians have debated whether the results for Pritchard should be recorded for India or Britain. He was born in India to a British colonial family, moved to London before qualifying for the Paris Olympics and later moved to the U.S. and embarked on an acting career.<\/p>\n<p>There&#x27;s no disputing this one.<\/p>\n<p>Chopra, a junior officer in the Indian army with the Rajputana Rifles, made his first mark on international athletics with a world junior title in 2016. Two years later, he became the first Indian athlete to win the javelin at the Asian Games and at the Commonwealth Games. Chopra&#x27;s journey began with a goal to lose some weight.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I come from a farming background,&quot; Chopra said. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was overweight and wanted to do some fitness training.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Somehow I ended up in an academy, and picked up javelin throw. The love affair started and now I&#x27;m here with this medal standing in front of you.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"4b432c65-3fec-4128-9ac1-2cf4e7340ae2\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/4b432c65-3fec-4128-9ac1-2cf4e7340ae2\" alt=\"Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra of Team India stands on the podium\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He set a new benchmark in Tokyo, holding off Jakub Vadlejch (86.67) and Vitezslav Vesely (85.44), both of the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>India has won eight Olympic gold medals in field hockey, more than any other nation, and the return of the men&#x27;s team to the medal podium at the Tokyo Games \u2014 a bronze \u2014 after a 41-year drought prompted widespread celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>A first gold medal in track and field is set to make Chopra a star in India.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#x27;t take long before the rewards started flowing in and he was on the phone with India&#x27;s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n<p>Cricket is the all-consuming sport in India, and all of its powerbrokers were watching.<\/p>\n<p>The Board of Control for Cricket in India quickly announced a cash reward for the Olympic medal winners. Military leaders chimed in, too.<\/p>\n<p>Chopra was ranked fourth heading into the Olympics and had some issues with his technique in the hot and steamy conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;But in my second throw I feel it&#x27;s my PB,&quot; he said. &quot;Finally I&#x27;m an Olympic champion.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He knew there&#x27;d be plenty of sports fans watching on TV at home, flicking between India&#x27;s cricket test match in England and the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;So proud moment for India and for me because they&#x27;re supporting me a lot,&quot; said Chopra, the son of a farming family. &quot;Today they&#x27;re all in front of the TV and they&#x27;re supporting me \u2014 so thank you India.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"230472e5-aba2-46ab-905d-d2bb80625092\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/230472e5-aba2-46ab-905d-d2bb80625092\" alt=\"Neeraj Chopra from India rejoices over gold.\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Former world champion Johannes Vetter of Germany was favoured to win, but placed ninth after the first three attempts and was out of contention early.
