Beaten but not bowed, Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has declared the Bledisloe Cup "dream is still alive" despite falling 33-25 to the All Blacks in tonight's series opener at Eden Park.<\/a><\/p>\n

Noah Lolesio's goalkicking woes hurt Australia but you could argue the final scoreline flattered the visitors, who lost the big moments but scored the game's last three tries to give some cheer to their fans.<\/p>\n

"I thought we showed a lot of courage to fight our way back into the game," Rennie told Nine\/Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"Probably the 20 minutes after halftime hurt or maybe the couple of minutes before it.<\/p>\n

"I thought we played smarter in that last period. There was a lot of space to kick in behind the All Blacks and we only profited off that once.<\/p>\n

"There's plenty of character in this group, as we saw in the French series, and we're learning."<\/p>\n

The Wallabies played without the suspended Marika Koroibete and Isi Naisarani<\/a> and it will be fascinating to see whether Rennie welcomes the pair back for the rematch at the same ground next Saturday.<\/p>\n

The final Bledisloe clash is set for August 28 at Perth's Optus Stadium.<\/p>\n

"So I guess the numbers don't change," Rennie said.<\/p>\n

"We still need to win one over here and win in Perth. So the dream is still alive."<\/p>\n

Wallabies captain Michael Hooper was relatively upbeat after the defeat, reflecting on some early set-piece struggles which set the tone for the match.<\/p>\n

"The All Blacks were really strong around their lineout D," Hooper said.<\/p>\n

"There's some pretty experienced guys we were coming up against.<\/p>\n

"It took us a while to claw back into the game, it was tough.<\/p>\n

\"Banks<\/p>\n

"We're finishing well in games, that's been the trend of the year, but we're just not getting our starts right.<\/p>\n

"If we can piece a bit more of the game together, we'll be in it."<\/p>\n

Hooper then signed off with a classy tribute to happy All Blacks centurion Aaron Smith.<\/p>\n

All Blacks great Sonny Bill Williams, meanwhile, said Australia's attacking firepower gave them reason for hope despite the weight of history against them.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies matched the All Blacks with four tries and if Lolesio's radar had been working then things may have been much tighter.<\/p>\n
