Rugby league legends Andrew Johns<\/a> and Peter Sterling were both left scratching their heads after the Storm were handed a controversial penalty late in their 28-18 win over Manly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Melbourne tonight was ruthless, punishing Manly twice in the second half with tries on the back of costly errors en route to their 17th straight win.<\/p>\n

And while Melbourne was more than deserving of tonight's win, it wasn't without a head-scratcher late in the match when Manly was penalised for a tackle off the ball that appeared impossible to avoid.<\/p>\n

With just under eight minutes remaining and the Sea Eagles trailing by eight, Des Hasler's men were penalised after Josh Schuster and Martin Taupau made a tackle on Storm hooker Brandon Smith, who was leading into the line.<\/p>\n

Smith's effort was side-by-side with Harry Grant, who had the ball and was showing to his teammate before dummying and going himself, which left the two Manly players stranded and forced into a collision with the Melbourne hooker.<\/p>\n

\"Manly<\/p>\n

"You can't [call that a penalty]. If someone leads into that line the close… This is just ridiculous," Johns said in commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

"He's (Brandon Smith) laughing!"<\/p>\n

"Collisions like that are going to happen, he goes right into the line and Schuster has to commit to the tackle.<\/p>\n

"Footwork, he gets his feet into a position to make the tackle, and the split second he (Grant) dummies and goes himself. That's ridiculous."<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sterling believes if Schuster and Taupau made no effort to prepare for Smith receiving the ball from Grant, then it would've resulted in an easy try had the latter opted to pass and not dummy and go himself.<\/p>\n

\"NRL<\/p>\n

"Not that close to the defensive line," Sterling added.<\/p>\n

"If he catches it and they (Schuster and Taupau) haven't made the effort, he's (Smith) through. You can't pull out that late.<\/p>\n

"Don't look at that in slow motion. Have a look in normal speed and see the decision making and the time they have."<\/p>\n
