The governing body of cycling suspended a German official for the rest of the year today for using a racist slur during the Olympic men's time trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The International Cycling Union said Patrick Moster accepted a ban through to December 31.<\/p>\n

Moster, the German cycling federation's sports director, won't be able to accompany his team to the road world championships in Belgium in September or the track worlds the following month.<\/p>\n

The UCI ruled that Moster's comments at the Tokyo Olympics<\/a> "were discriminatory and contrary to the basic rules of decency."<\/p>\n

Moster used the slur while a German rider chased opponents from Algeria and Eritrea during the race on July 28.<\/p>\n

The comment was heard on TV broadcasts.<\/p>\n

The UCI said it "condemns all forms of racist and discriminatory behaviour".<\/p>\n

Moster was sent home by the German Olympic team a day after he used the slur, amid mounting public criticism.<\/p>\n

He remains suspended "until further notice" by his national federation.<\/p>\n

Moster later apologised, blaming his remarks on "the heat of the moment".<\/p>\n

On German TV broadcaster ARD, commentator Florian Nass was left stunned, describing the comments as "totally wrong".<\/p>\n

"Words fail me," he said. "Something like that has no place in sport."<\/p>\n

Arndt also condemned the words used in social media posts.<\/p>\n

"I am appalled by the incidents at today's Olympic time trial and would like to distance myself clearly from the statements of the sporting director!" the 29-year-old wrote.<\/p>\n

"Such words are not acceptable. The Olympics and cycling stand for tolerance, respect and fairness. I represent these values 100 per cent and take my hat off to all the great athletes who have come from all over the world here in Tokyo!"<\/p>\n
