An emotional Genevieve Gregson has admitted she's "not OK yet" following the heartbreaking end to her Olympic<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n

Gregson was on Wednesday within sight of the finish of the 3000m steeplechase when she fell at the final water hurdle.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Australian, who was celebrating her 32nd birthday, was taken away in a wheelchair.<\/p>\n

She says she knew immediately she'd ruptured the Achilles tendon in her right leg.<\/p>\n

"It's raw, it's hard," Gregson said, her voice breaking.<\/p>\n

"I'm not OK yet, but I will be.<\/p>\n

"I haven't spoken to many people, so that's why I'm a bit vulnerable right now, but I'll be happy soon. Just getting through it."<\/p>\n

Gregson said she'd been dealing with problems in her left Achilles since the Rio Games in 2016 and had learned to manage the chronic injury.<\/p>\n

Explaining that her right Achilles had been a little tender in the days leading up to the race, Gregson says she believes compensating for the injured left Achilles caused the eventual problems in her right leg.<\/p>\n

"I just thought I'd make it through, but it was just like a gunshot to my heel as soon as I hit the deck.<\/p>\n

"I didn't even bother. I just reached around and felt that there was no tendon left.<\/p>\n

"I just laid there in disbelief, I almost expected it a little bit."<\/p>\n

Gregson was full of praise for the team's medical staff, who have worked with her since London 2012.<\/p>\n

She said they were developing a plan for the coming months, which was likely to involve surgery on both Achilles tendons.<\/p>\n

"(It) means the next year ahead of me is pretty brutal, I'll be wheelchair bound for a while," she said, fighting back tears.<\/p>\n

"Ryan (husband Ryan Gregson) is on his way home, I'll meet him in Singapore and we'll work out a plan from there, and it will be a good one, because we're a good team and I wouldn't have come this far without him.<\/p>\n

"I don't feel like I'm done yet. I'm such a proud Australian athlete, I just couldn't imagine a setback like this tearing me away from the sport."<\/p>\n
