Australian Harry Garside has claimed bronze in the men's lightweight category (57-63kg) after going down to champion Cuban boxer Andy Cruz in today's semi-final.<\/p>\n

While he was unable to progress through to the gold medal showdown, Garside today made history by becoming the first Australian since 1988 to win an Olympic medal in boxing.<\/p>\n

Heading into today's bout, Garside had won all three of his bouts at the Tokyo Games<\/a>, but wasn't able to match it with Cruz who took the opening two rounds comfortably en route to a unanimous win.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old plumber from Melbourne couldn't keep up with the speed of the two-time world champion and consistently wore shots to the chin.<\/p>\n

"He's just an exceptional athlete," Garside said after the fight.<\/p>\n

"I always wanted to fight him and see how I stack up against him. He was just too good tonight.<\/p>\n

"I felt outclassed a little bit, but I had a red hot crack, mate. That's all Australians do, we have a red hot dip.<\/p>\n

"I'm proud of myself for that, but I really wanted to be the first-ever to win an Olympic gold medal.<\/p>\n

"But hopefully, he goes far in the tournament and wins the next fight."<\/p>\n

Cruz goes through to the gold medal bout where he will come up against American Keyshawn Davis.<\/p>\n
