Dutch rider Laurine van Riessen was hospitalised last night after a heavy crash in the women's keirin race at the Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Competing in her quarter-final heat, Van Riessen lost control of her front wheel in her sliding across into the path of Britain's Katy Marchant at the Izu Velodrome.<\/p>\n

Both riders crashed to the floor, leaving the Dutch star to seek medical treatment for several minutes on the track before she was stretchered from the arena.<\/p>\n

According to reports, the 33-year-old suffered multiple broken ribs, a broken collarbone and bruised lung and lost consciousness briefly. She was transferred to hospital.<\/p>\n

Van Riessen's Dutch teammate Shanne Braspennincx delivered a brilliant ride in the final to claim the gold medal and said it was difficult to focus on winning with her teammate hurt.<\/p>\n

"Coach Hugo Haak said that our team doctor is with her," Braspennincx told reporters.<\/p>\n

"He told me she's in good hands. I was worried about her, she went to the hospital, but at that moment I have to make the switch and focus on myself.<\/p>\n

"I know it's part of (bike racing) but this is what you really don't want."<\/p>\n

As for Marchant, she got up from the crash and finished the race but the collision cruelled her chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

"It's not my day is it," Marchant she said.<\/p>\n

"We were all fighting a bit on the inside and I'm not sure if someone hit into Laurine or what but she came down in front of me and I had nowhere to go."<\/p>\n

Marchant said she would be back for Friday's individual sprint event.<\/p>\n

"(I'm) a bit battered and bruised but I'm all right," she said.<\/p>\n
