Veteran Knights halfback Mitchell Pearce<\/a> unleashed a lethal left-foot step in the 28-20 win over the Broncos to score a try and leave rugby league great Paul Vautin<\/a> piling on the praise.<\/p>\n

The former NSW State of Origin playmaker gave Newcastle a boost just before half-time in the Brisbane clash when he shot back toward the posts off his left foot, before levering his right arm over the line as he slipped through three defenders.<\/p>\n

"Wonderful play from Mitchell Pearce," Vautin said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"That's Mitchell Pearce circa 10 years ago, in his prime at the Roosters.<\/p>\n

"Beautiful stuff, big left-foot step, we know he's got this step. Bang. There it is.<\/p>\n

"And he's still got a bit of pace there, Mitchell.<\/p>\n

"That's a great grab, a great putdown."<\/p>\n

Pearce also set up a try and garnered 96 metres.<\/p>\n

Pectoral and hamstring injuries have limited Pearce to a stop-start 2021 campaign, a season in which he notched his 300th NRL game in a clash with Wests Tigers in the third round.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old has played just seven games this season and on Thursday night ran out for his first match after a four-round lay-off.<\/p>\n

While Chris Randall replaced a rested Jayden Brailey at hooker for the match against Brisbane, Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien is hoping his new-look spine, consisting of Kalyn Ponga<\/a>, Jake Clifford, Pearce and Brailey, can gel in the lead-up to the finals.<\/p>\n

"Good on ya, Mitch," Vautin said following Pearce's try in the Broncos game.<\/p>\n

"Welcome back to the first-grade team, champ."<\/p>\n

The Knights are sitting seventh on the ladder, one win ahead of the Titans, Sharks, Raiders and Dragons, who are all yet to play in this round.<\/p>\n
