It's been revealed a "fired up player meeting" occurred in the lead-up to Hawthorn's botched coaching succession plan<\/a>, with Hawks veteran Jack Gunston butting heads with young members of the playing group.<\/p>\n

It emerged last week legendary head coach Alastair Clarkson would step down from his role earlier than planned<\/a> despite a succession plan put in place, which was meant to see the four-time premiership coach replaced by club great Sam Mitchell at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n

But, according to Eddie McGuire, before Clarkson officially pulled the pin on the coaching changeover a heated players' meeting took place relating to the issue.<\/p>\n

The former Collingwood president claims Gunston, a three-time premiership Hawk under Clarkson, was left frustrated with young members of the playing group who wanted the coaching changeover to take place quicker than originally planned.<\/p>\n

"My understanding from one person on the inside is that a couple of weeks ago the young blokes said 'Listen, this is our career, why don't we start now and get it going quickly, get the new coach in, why are we going to wait 18 months with all this mucking around?'," McGuire told Nine's Footy Classified.<\/p>\n

"Then I understand Jack Gunston was very, very strong in the meeting last week when it all came to a head.<\/p>\n

"He was very strong on the way Clarkson was being treated.<\/p>\n

"I understand it was the most fired up player meeting they could remember."<\/p>\n
