Australia's Genevieve Gregson has ruptured her Achilles tendon after falling at the final water hurdle in the 3000m steeplchase at the Tokyo Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gregson, on her 32nd birthday, was taken away in a wheelchair, and now faces months of rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

She confirmed the news in a social media post.<\/p>\n

"I'm heartbroken & don't have the words right now to respond to you all but in short – ruptured Achilles on the last water jump," she wrote.<\/p>\n

"Happy Birthday me! Thank you for all the support & lovely messages. I'll try to respond in time. For now I need to mend my heart, soul & Achilles."<\/p>\n

Gregson had been troubled by a tight left Achilles before the race, but actually ruptured the right Achilles.<\/p>\n

She's one of the most popular members of the Australian team, and is competing at her third Olympics.<\/p>\n

Gregson started at a cracking pace, pushing the front of the pack out hard early. But she soon began to wane, falling drastically off the frontrunners to the back of the field.<\/p>\n

As Uganda's Peruth Chemutai claimed the gold in a time of 9:01.45, Gregson was nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n

Replays showed Gregson had fallen over the final water hurdle, crashing to the ground and clutching at her ankle.<\/p>\n

Medical attention was soon on hand, and she was placed in a wheelchair and taken away.<\/p>\n

American Courtney Frerichs finished second, with Kenya's Hyvin Kiyeng winning the bronze. <\/p>\n
