The 2021 Rugby League World Cup<\/a> will be postponed until 2022 despite declarations the tournament would be staged without the Australian and New Zealand teams<\/a>, according to the PA news agency. <\/p>\n

An announcement regarding the postponement is imminent, PA reports.<\/p>\n

World Cup<\/a> officials initially vowed to go ahead after Australia and New Zealand pulled out, citing safety concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic, making a direct plea to players to keep the tournament alive.<\/p>\n

However, the statement issued last week on behalf of all 16 NRL clubs calling for the tournament to be rescheduled, proved to be the final nail in the coffin.<\/p>\n

World Cup organisers had opened talks with Indigenous and Maori representatives<\/a> with a view to securing replacements for the Kangaroos and Kiwis but when the NRL re-scheduled the Women's NRL competition for October, in direct opposition to the World Cup, organisers were left with no choice but to look to next year.<\/p>\n

It's understood the UK Government, a major financial backer of the tournament, agreed it should be put back 12 months and that recommendation will go before an emergency World Cup board meeting.<\/p>\n

The expected announcement comes about two months before the scheduled start and three weeks since organisers announced the tournament would go ahead as planned.<\/p>\n

World Cup officials will now have to find extra funding to keep the operation in place until next year.<\/p>\n

The date of the 2022 tournament may change with officials looking to avoid a clash with the FIFA World Cup in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.<\/p>\n
