Australia's women's water polo team are out of medal contention at the Tokyo Olympics<\/a> after a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to ROC in the quarter-finals, in a match that saw the Australian coach red-carded.<\/p>\n

The Aussie Stingers struggled in front of goal, scoring their eight goals from 32 shots while ROC's goalkeeper Anna Karnaukh was exceptional, saving 13 shots.<\/p>\n

Even though Australia enjoyed the lion's share of possession, they couldn't take advantage as Russia beat Australia for the first time in Olympic women's water polo history.<\/p>\n

Bronte Halligan and Ellie Armit top-scored for the Aussies with two goals each.<\/p>\n

Stingers coach Predrag Mihailovic was red-carded and forced to leave his spot poolside with just under four minutes remaining in the match after he appeared to protest a penalty shot awarded to ROC.<\/p>\n

Goals from Keesja Gofers and Zoe Arancini had the Aussie Stingers up 2-1 early, but the ROC made the most of their limited opportunities to lead 4-2 after the opening eight minutes.<\/p>\n

It was a lead they would never relinquish.<\/p>\n

ROC asserted themselves with a higher level of intensity, especially in defence, as Australia's usually potent attackers struggled to get good looks on goal.<\/p>\n

ROC had Australia right on the ropes when they led 8-4 late in the third quarter, but goals from Tilly Kearns and Bronte Halligan got the Stingers back with a chance to steal victory in the last quarter.<\/p>\n

But it wasn't to be as Russia ran down the clock to move into the semi-finals against USA.<\/p>\n

It was a disappointing end to their campaign given their strong form during the preliminary rounds that included an impressive win over European heavyweights the Netherlands 15-12<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Before tonight, Australia had won all three previous Olympic matches against Russia at Sydney 2000, London 2012 and Rio 2016.<\/p>\n

Australia have two remaining classification games in Tokyo to decide final placings from fifth to eighth, starting with a clash against Canada on Thursday.<\/p>\n
