A dramatic crash on the final lap of the men's team pursuit event sparked chaos and confusion – and a fair bit of aggro – as the mayhem continued in the track cycling at the Tokyo Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Denmark were closing in on victory over Great Britain in the four-man race, and with just 250 metres remaining in the 4km event, would progress through to the final and a match-up against Italy for the gold medal.<\/p>\n

But chaos then ensued.<\/p>\n

Great Britain had earlier lost their fourth rider, which is usually planned, but their third rider – Harry Tanfield – lost contact with his two teammates.<\/p>\n

And as Denmark caught him, Frederik Madsen – on the front of the Dane train – seemed to have his head down and failed to see Tanfield, riding straight into the back of him at a speed just over 60km\/h.<\/p>\n

Both riders hit the track hard and slid a fair distance.<\/p>\n

They got up gingerly, with Tanfield looking quite shaken.<\/p>\n

The TV audio seemed to pick up Madsen shouting "F— them!" as he walked away.<\/p>\n

The crash left both teams with just two riders.<\/p>\n

That created confusion as the final time is usually taken from the third and final rider to cross the line.<\/p>\n

After lengthy deliberations, race officials ruled Denmark had officially caught Great Britain and so they would progress to tomorrow's final.<\/p>\n

An appeal against the result may be lodged by the Brits.<\/p>\n

The Danes were the hot favourites after smashing the Olympic record in the qualification round and are also the reigning world champions.<\/p>\n

However, Italy set a new world record in their ride against New Zealand in a thrilling finish.<\/p>\n

New Zealand took the lead in the second half of the race but the Italians clawed their way back to set a new world record of 3:42.307.<\/p>\n

Australia's men's cycling team pursuit team were yesterday rocked by a freak accident after Alex Porter's handlebars snapped off his bike mid-race<\/a>, sending him crashing face-first into the velodrome.<\/p>\n

Great Britain's women's team pursuit squad also had an incident during qualifying at Izu Velodrome.<\/p>\n

The Brits put up a monster effort to overcome Team USA and progress to the final, setting a new world record of 4:06.748 in the process.<\/p>\n

As they crossed the finish line, the team began congratulating each other but it went awry when Katie Archibald and Neah Evans crashed into each other, sending the pair tumbling down the banked walls of the velodrome.<\/p>\n

No rider was seriously injured in the process.<\/p>\n
