Asian nations offer their gold medal winning athletes the most for Olympic<\/a> success.<\/p>\n

US-based news website SwimSwam analysed medal bonuses paid by Olympic committees ahead of the Tokyo Games and found the astounding difference paid to athletes between competing nations at this year's event in Japan.<\/p>\n

Asian countries are at the top of the list as the most generous, with Singapore awarding the single-highest bonus, SGD$1 million (AUD$1,003,027) for winning an Olympic gold medal.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong isn't far behind, offering $875,000 for gold, while Indonesia and Thailand both offer more than $400,000.<\/p>\n

Australia isn't anywhere to be found at the top of the list, with the AOC rewarding athletes $20,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze.<\/p>\n

While any financial reward is a good one, Australia's medal bonus ranks 19th among other countries on the list. Some athletes are privately sponsored like Australia's best rowers, who are given financial assistance by billionaire Gina Rinehart, who pays a $525-a-week wage for the top 50 competitors in the sport.<\/p>\n

The United States more than doubles Australia's reward for gold with $50,000, as well as $30,000 for silver and $20,000 for bronze.<\/p>\n

Japan offers more than $60,000 for gold, France more than $85,000, while Italy increased its reward by 30 per cent this year to $288,000. Italian 100m champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs' gold medal<\/a> couldn't have come at a better time.<\/p>\n

Other countries offer different types of rewards for the athletes like avoiding military service or luxury vehicles or even houses.<\/p>\n

In addition to the medal bonus, the Australian Institute of Sport offers means-tested grants of up to $17,500 to help athletes in their pursuit for gold and a further $8,000 for travel and training expenses.<\/p>\n

The federal government allocated $50.6 million in "high performance grants" for both Olympians and Paralympians in the latest budget.<\/p>\n
