The Bulldogs<\/a> made a mistake by pouncing on a Roosters reject – halfback Kyle Flanagan – and signing him for three years, rugby league great Laurie Daley says.<\/p>\n

Daley said that top clubs like the Roosters did not lose valuable players, meaning that Flanagan's shock axing after just one season last year should have been a red flag.<\/p>\n

Instead, the Bulldogs pounced on the dumped No.7 with a three-year deal worth more than $1 million. Flanagan has struggled to hold his place in the team this season.<\/p>\n

"Looking back now \u2014 and they probably won't admit it \u2014 but it's probably been a mistake to sign him for three years," Daley said on Sky Sports Radio.<\/p>\n

"Like anyone, the Roosters, the Melbourne Storm, if they allow a player to walk sometimes you've got question why they are releasing them? Why haven't they stuck with that player?<\/p>\n

"Do they not rate him as a player? Is there something wrong with his attitude? Is it off-field behaviour? What is it and what is the reason why are those quality clubs are letting players go? And then you've got to dig deep and fine the reason.<\/p>\n

"Because if they want to keep someone, and they tick all the boxes, they're not losing them … unless it comes down a purely financial decision for that player and I don't think this was a purely financial decision for Kyle."<\/p>\n

Daley said that Flanagan's defence, typically a big confidence factor for halfbacks, was an issue.<\/p>\n

"All I'm saying is, the Roosters had some concerns with him defensively, whether he could handle it or not," Daley said.<\/p>\n

"The Bulldogs signed him, they said he was going to be given the keys to the team, it hasn't worked out and there has now been some talk that they're trying to move him on \u2014 or they're going to give him every opportunity to succeed.<\/p>\n

"I hope he does succeed because he's had a lot of pressure on him and it must be tough for a young man, his father's an NRL coach and coming into a system where the spotlight is on you. You've been traded away, you've gone to another club, there's high expectations and it doesn't turn out the way you want it to turn out.<\/p>\n

"So this is a good opportunity for him to show some perseverance, keep working on his game, get himself a little bit bigger, making sure he works on all aspects of his game \u2014 defensively he needs to be stronger. He needs to spend a bit more time in the gym to be a bit more physical in the way he goes about defending. <\/p>\n

"He needs to challenge the line a little bit more and make sure his kicking game is spot on. He's got the skill, but he's just got to be able to bring it every game he plays."<\/p>\n

It was thought that Flanagan would form an impressive young halves combination with incoming Penrith star Matt Burton next season, yet he has struggled for traction under coach Trent Barrett.<\/p>\n

He has played 11 games this season and featured in his side's 34-6 loss to the Titans on Monday.<\/p>\n
