The Matildas' gold medal hopes at the Tokyo Olympics have gone begging after falling 1-0 to Sweden in a tense semi-final clash.<\/a><\/p>\n

Friodlina Rolfo was the only goal-scorer on a tough night in Yokohama, as both sides traded blows until the final whistle.<\/p>\n

Questions will be asked of the officials, however, after a goal to Australia's Sam Kerr was waived away after apparent contact off the ball during a set-piece.<\/p>\n

Under some contention, Australia's Emily van Egmond was deemed to have impeded Sweden's defence as Kerr belted a volley home off a darting free-kick.<\/p>\n

It was a cruel blow for the Aussies on the stroke of half-time, who were then subject to a complete flip in momentum when Sweden netted in the opening minute of the second period.<\/p>\n

A cracking shot from outside the box was deflected high and caught spin, leaving Aussie keeper Teagan Micah to backtrack, swatting the ball off her line.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Micah, her save landed in the path of Swedish striker Rolfo who managed to volley it into the corner of the net.<\/p>\n

The Matildas looked a far better version of the team that lost 4-2 just days ago to Sweden during the group stage. Yet, despite shaking off a slow start, the Aussies were unable to make the most of their chances in the box.<\/p>\n

They will play off for the bronze on Thursday in Kashima against USA. To make matters worse for the Aussies, superstar defender Ellie Carpenter was red-carded in the final minute of the game and will miss the contest.<\/p>\n

Sweden will play for the gold Friday at Tokyo's Olympic Stadium against Canada, who upset the Americans in their semi-final clash.<\/p>\n
