Mexico's softball team has apologised for dumping their uniforms in rubbish bags in the Olympic Games<\/a> athletes village after they missed out on a medal in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

Boxers Brianda Tamara and Esmeralda Falcon busted their Olympic teammates by posting photos and criticism on social media.<\/p>\n

"This uniform represents years of effort, sacrifice and tears," Tamara wrote.<\/p>\n

"All Mexican athletes yearn to wear it with dignity, and today the Mexican softball team sadly left it all in the garbage of the Olympic village."<\/p>\n

The softballers finished fourth after losing to Canada in the bronze medal match.<\/p>\n

The team is largely comprised of United States-based players and they apologised on social media while explaining their actions.<\/p>\n

"We are sorry that the actions of our team have caused such disappointment for our supporters and Olympic fans across the country," the statement said.<\/p>\n

"We had no intention of disrespecting our country or our flag. We had no intention of disregarding what being in the Olympics means for so many.<\/p>\n

"We took home all of our game uniforms, embroidered apparel and softball equipment \u2014 as what we could fit in a single suitcase as required. We understand that is no excuse for giving the impression of disregard for such a historic event. We will work to do better and be better."<\/p>\n

Mexico's head of Olympic delegation, Mario Garcia, was furious and has launched an investigation.<\/p>\n

"I do feel it is an offence to our national identity," Garcia told Mediotiempo.<\/p>\n

"We would have liked it not to have happened, because the Mexican Olympic Committee defended that biculturalism that the team had."<\/p>\n

However the president of Mexico's softball federation, Rolando Guerrero, was more forgiving, blaming a lack of luggage space and saying that some players also left behind expensive gloves.<\/p>\n

"We won't be going after anyone or responding, or rebutting anything on social media," Guerrero said.<\/p>\n

"It was simply a matter of too much cargo."<\/p>\n
