After scoring 17 and 28 in the first two heats, Wearn has been sensational in the final eight heats, not scoring above 12 in any of the final eight heats.<\/p>\n
With the ten lowest scores from the heats advancing to the medal race, Wearn cannot lose the gold medal, even if he finishes last in Sunday's final.<\/p>\n
The 26-year-old's net score of 49 leads Norway's Hermann Tomasgaard (71) and Croatia's Tonci Stipanovic (74).<\/p>\n

Wearn, Tomasgaard and Stipanovic will be joined by Cyprus' Pavlos Kontides, Germany's Philipp Buhl, Brazil's Robert Scheidt, Korea's Jeemin Ha, New Zealand's Sam Meech, France's Jean Baptiste Bernaz and Finland's Kaarle Tapper in the final.<\/p>\n
While the gold is already sealed up, Tomasgaard and Stipanovic will hope to hold off Kontides, who is the only other finalist within striking distance of either a silver or bronze medal.<\/p>\n
With his win, Wearn continues Australia's dominance in the Laser event at the Olympics, becoming Australia's third consecutive Laser gold medallist after Tom Burton (Rio 2016) and Tom Slingsby (London 2012).<\/p>\n
The Perth native took up sailing at the of five and has represented Australia's sailing team since 2014.<\/p>\n
He took out the Laser European Championship in 2018, becoming the first Australian to do so since Slingsby in 2008.<\/p>\n
