A million emotions could be running through an athlete's head after being pipped for a gold medal, particularly by a countrywoman – but for Cate Campbell, it was only elation for both herself, and for teammate Emma McKeon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just seconds after McKeon touched the wall to secure gold, and Campbell bronze in the 100m freestyle, the pair embraced in the water.<\/p>\n

"Emma! You won, I'm so proud of you," Campbell exclaimed as the cameras fixated on the two.<\/p>\n

For Campbell, it was a moment of satisfaction for her relay partner, and it summed up the selfless attitude she has always shown as an athlete and a teammate.<\/p>\n

The beautiful moment touched Australia.<\/p>\n

For Campbell it was also a fantastic way to exorcise the demons of Rio five years ago, when she failed to medal in this event after going in as the favourite.<\/p>\n

After setting a new world record in the 100m freestyle earlier in 2016, Campbell blitzed the field in the heats and semi-finals, breaking the Olympic record in both swims.<\/p>\n

But in the final, she finished nearly half a second slower than her semi-final effort and finished sixth, as Canada's Penny Oleksiak and American Simone Manuel both touched the wall at the exact same time and split the gold medal.<\/p>\n

"This is my fourth Olympics, but it's only my second individual medal – it honestly means the world to me," she said after the race.<\/p>\n

But it seemed like her personal triumphs were put to the side, such was her excitement for McKeon, who together won gold in the 4 x 100m relay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"I'm so happy for Emma, seeing her get up, and I'm so glad there's going to be an Australian national anthem going through the stadium and I'm so glad that I get to be on the podium and share that moment with her."<\/p>\n

Campbell began tearing up during her post-race interview, where you could see how much securing this medal meant to her.<\/p>\n

"Coming in to this morning's performance, I really wanted to put forward my best performance, and that is pretty much a season's best. To do that in an Olympic final off a very, very challenging year that I've had, I'm really happy and emotions are going to start to get the better of me," she said through tears.<\/p>\n

"It's been a really long journey to get here, and I'm incredibly proud of that perofmance. These aren't sad tears at all.<\/p>\n

"I'm so thrilled and I just want to thank everyone who stood behind me, and got me to this point, because I couldn't have done it without them."<\/p>\n
