ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys<\/a> has revealed his plans to use NRL players as role models to urge the public to get their COVID-19 vaccines in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

After two weeks of quarantining in Queensland, NRL players were officially released into the broader community on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

V'landys revealed that players would still be prohibited from attending pubs and nightclubs, but could attend restaurants and cafes, and urged them to exercise "common sense" when making choices.<\/p>\n

While he denied that NRL players would be forced to take the COVID-19 vaccine in order to continue playing, V'landys revealed his hopes of using the players as vaccination poster boys.<\/p>\n

"We don't want to take away people's freedoms and liberties," he told 9News Sydney when asked about mandatory vaccinations for NRL players.<\/p>\n

"We're always going to be guided by the government in regards to a vaccination. <\/p>\n

"We do [want players to be vaccination role models] and we are going to use our players in order to encourage people to vaccinate and that'll be announced in the next couple of weeks."<\/p>\n

After reports suggesting that the NRL had been privately disappointed at segments of the media for attempting to catch out players' families in minor breaches, V'landys made his displeasure public.<\/p>\n

"I think it's unsavoury to be quite frank," of the media coverage. "These people have gone up there to be with their families like the rest of us."<\/p>\n

"To be looking for someone to make the smallest of mistakes in a bubble, trying to do a 'gotcha' moment, in my view is completely unnecessary."<\/p>\n
