{"id":107055,"date":"2021-07-28T08:41:53","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T08:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=107055"},"modified":"2021-07-28T10:01:01","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T10:01:01","slug":"rowing-heroes-uplift-weary-nation-in-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=107055","title":{"rendered":"Rowing heroes &#039;uplift&#039; weary nation in lockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A flood of praise has poured in for Australia&#x27;s rowers following their morning of domination in Tokyo today, which saw them haul in <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/tokyo-olympics-2021-australian-rowing-womens-fours-win-gold-mens-fours-final-results\/5c4bb4db-c211-4ab2-8130-aa6e2621e3fd\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"two gold medals\">two gold medals<\/a> and two bronze at Sea Forest Waterway.<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenal morning on the water, in which the men&#x27;s and women&#x27;s fours crews won gold and the men&#x27;s and women&#x27;s quadruple scull teams grabbed bronze, has been lauded by ABC sports editor Paul Johnson on Twitter as &quot;something nice to uplift the country&quot; during the lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/tokyo-olympics-2021-live-updates-day-5-news-ariarne-titmus-katie-ledecky-swimming-jess-fox-canoe-boomers-olyroos-hockey\/0afbaf46-8a7e-4534-b447-5df952ac5da1\" target=\"\" title=\"OLYMPICS LIVE BLOG: LATEST UPDATES, NEWS\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>OLYMPICS LIVE BLOG: LATEST UPDATES, NEWS<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <em><strong>|<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/olympics\/tokyo-games-event-centre\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"TOKYO GAMES EVENT CENTRE: SCHEDULE, RESULTS, MEDAL TALLY\"><em><strong>TOKYO GAMES EVENT CENTRE: SCHEDULE, RESULTS, MEDAL TALLY<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>ABC Canberra radio presenter Anna Vidot had praise of a similar sentiment, posting: &quot;Rowers really out here saving the day for Australia&#x27;s collective mental health.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Australian author Xavier Wallace labelled the morning &quot;incredible&quot; and NSW minister for sport Natalie Ward congratulated Australia&#x27;s women&#x27;s fours, who are based at Rowing Australia&#x27;s national training centre in Penrith.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Fantastic effort,&quot; Ward wrote.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"576b3d46-96aa-489a-beaa-596ad96dfa18\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/576b3d46-96aa-489a-beaa-596ad96dfa18\" alt=\"Gold medalists Lucy Stephan, Rosemary Popa, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle Mcintyre of Team Australia pose with their medals \" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The women&#x27;s fours team &#8211; consisting of Stephan Lucy, Popa Rosemary, Jessica Morrison and Annabelle McIntyre &#8211; ignited the blitz when they clinched gold, clocking 6:15.37 to break the Olympic record and edge the Netherlands (6:15.71) and Ireland (6:20.46).<\/p>\n<p>Australia then collected another gold when the men&#x27;s fours crew &#8211; powered by Alex Purnell, Spencer Turrin, Jack Hargeaves and Alex Hill &#8211; repeated the heroics of the women, recording 5:42.76 to pip Romania (5:43.13) and Italy (5:43.60) in a three-way thriller.<\/p>\n<p>The brilliant results continued to roll in as the men&#x27;s quadruple sculls team &#8211; run by Jack Cleary, Caleb Antill, Cameron Girdlestone and Luke Letcher &#8211; salvaged bronze, registering 5:33.97 in a heart-stopping battle with the Netherlands (5:32.03) and Great Britain (5:33.75).<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"41ec30ba-6c59-448e-891d-c2bc6928ed42\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/41ec30ba-6c59-448e-891d-c2bc6928ed42\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"1396\" data-height=\"785\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And Australia&#x27;s final medal of this morning&#x27;s rowing bonanza was won when the women&#x27;s quadruple sculls unit &#8211; comprised of Ria Thompson, Rowena Meredith, Harriet Hudson and Caitlin Cronin &#8211; claimed bronze, producing a time of 6:12.08 as they trailed China (6:05.13) and Poland (6:11.36).<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#x27;s victory in the women&#x27;s fours saw Popa join her mum, Sue Chapman-Popa, as an Olympic medallist in the event.
