Dennis was only 2.51s behind Dumoulin.<\/p>\n
Less than three seconds separated Dumoulin and Stefan Kueng in fourth.<\/p>\n
The other Aussie in the race, Richie Porte, finished a disappointing 27th, and after his run announced that next year would be his last in pro cycling.<\/p>\n
The seven medals from Australia today – three golds and four bronze – means that day five in Tokyo will go down as one of the most successful days in Australian Olympic history.<\/p>\n

For the 31-year-old Dennis, his bronze success justified his decision to skip last weekend's road race in Tokyo<\/a>.<\/p>\n He prioritised the individual time trial – his pet event and the one in which he won world titles in 2018 and 2019<\/a> – as he sought for redemption from Rio five years ago when a bike malfunction cost him dearly.<\/p>\n Dennis was on the way to a likely silver medal when his aerobars snapped and he slipped to fifth.<\/p>\n Porte, meanwhile, made no excuses and may have been heavy in the legs after he competed in the 234km road race last Saturday.<\/p>\n "Probably the worst ride I have had in a long time," he said after coming in close to six minutes behind Roglic.<\/p>\n "Such a hard course. But… no excuses. This one's on me. Just wasn't up to it.<\/p>\n "It hasn't been a great Games, but it's still better than being in hospital like I was in Rio after the road race.
