American swim star Caeleb Dressel is the man standing in the way of Kyle Chalmers<\/a> winning 100m freestyle gold in Tokyo, but even Aussies will give the hulking sprinter a big rap for his selfless act this morning.<\/p>\n

Dressel was part of the American relay team that powered to victory in the 4x100m freestyle relay final in Tokyo in the third quickest time ever.<\/p>\n

The Americans clocked a time of 3:08.97 to beat Italy (3:10.11) while Chalmers anchored Australia (3:10.22) with a blistering leg to claim bronze.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was a winning start to Dressel's quest to claim six gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, trying to emulate compatriot and Rio Olympics teammate Michael Phelps<\/a> by capturing a big bag of golds.<\/p>\n

He stood proudly at the top of the podium with his gold medal, celebrating with teammates Zach Apple, Bowen Becker and Blake Pieroni.<\/p>\n

But he wouldn't hold onto his medal for long.<\/p>\n

As the Americans made their way around the edge of the pool following the medal ceremony, Dressel sought out someone in the grandstand to come closer.<\/p>\n

He then tossed his gold medal over the railing to a beaming Brooks Curry, who swam in place of Dressel in the heats to help ensure the defending Olympic champions qualified for the final.<\/p>\n

Both of them, ultimately, will get gold medals. The IOC makes sure everyone who swims a leg in relay heats of that event receives whatever medal the final team of four wins.<\/p>\n

Heat swimmers, however, don't participate in medal ceremonies.<\/p>\n

But it was a kind-hearted and noble gesture from the 24-year-old as it meant Curry didn't have to wait another second to receive his precious gold.<\/p>\n

The men's 100m freestyle is highly anticipated, with the relay final proving how many chance there are to win the blue riband event.<\/p>\n

Defending champion from Rio in the 100m, Chalmers' 46.44sec leg sent an ominous warning to favourite Dressel – who led off the USA team in 47.26s – while Apple's swim also put his name up as a contender.<\/p>\n
