AFL greats Matthew Lloyd and Kane Cornes believe the writing is on the wall for Carlton coach David Teague<\/a>, with Cornes declaring the Blues players "gave up on the coach" in the loss to North Melbourne<\/a>. <\/p>\n

After a stirring win against arch-rivals Collingwood last week<\/a>, the Blues came into the clash against the AFL's bottom-placed side with slim finals hopes that were emphatically extinguished in a woeful third quarter which saw the Roos ram on seven unanswered goals.<\/p>\n

Despite the club publicly continuing to back Teague, who is contracted for 2022, Cornes said the performance in the 39-point loss to North Melbourne was telling.<\/p>\n

"The players look to me like they've given up on the coach," he told Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show<\/em>. <\/p>\n

\"David<\/p>\n

"We can show a million examples of that. During that third quarter they gave up on the coach. <\/p>\n

"The demise is coming for David Teague. I think we've all been around footy long enough to know which way this is going. <\/p>\n

"Now whether that's this week, in a month [or] in 12 months' time, he's not going to be the long-term option as Carlton's coach because he hasn't brought into the defensive aspects of the game. <\/p>\n

"A defensive coach could come in and instantly through the course of a pre-season make Carlton a four-goal better side."<\/p>\n

Cornes' point was echoed by Lloyd, who also touched on the defensive shortcomings that have been on full display all season for the 13th-placed Blues.<\/p>\n

"After half-time, [it was] 13 goals to six," he told 3AW's Sportsday<\/em>. "There was a lack of care to defend, which would be really concerning if I'm a board member of Carlton."<\/p>\n

"I'd be saying to myself, 'Can a Don Pyke for example make Petrevski-Seton, Paddy Dow and Liam Stocker a better player?', even Patrick Cripps<\/a> can be a better player, he doesn't defend well. <\/p>\n

"[Cripps doesn't run hard enough], he doesn't stick tackles and he doesn't have the urgency to defend. <\/p>\n

"Like Trent Cotchin turned things around, someone needs to be that demanding of the captain to say, 'If you're not doing it, well what hope do we have of the rest underneath doing it?', and I think that's an issue for Carlton with their leader in that manner. <\/p>\n

"I felt for Jones and [Jacob] Weitering on the weekend. I know [Nick] Larkey kicked seven, but I wouldn't have wanted to be a fullback in that side."<\/p>\n
