Swimmers mingling during medal ceremonies have been warned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that they are not exempt from the strict COVID-19 protocols in place at the Tokyo Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Olympics officials' eyebrows were left raised after observing the behaviour of winners at this morning's medal winners in the finals of a number of men's and women's swimming events.<\/p>\n

Under the current regulations, athletes have been told to stay on their own podium step when accepting their medals, maintaining a distance from their fellow medallists.<\/p>\n

All 12 swimmers in the women's 4x100m freestyle podium, including the gold medal-winning Australian quartet<\/a> of Bronte Campbell, Cate Campbell, Meg Harris and Emma McKeon, were pictured without masks on and were spotted hugging.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the three medalists in the men's 400m individual medley<\/a> – American duo Chase Kalisz and Jay Literland and Australia's Brendon Smith – were also pictured maskless.<\/p>\n

The maskless photos which did the rounds earned the attention of the IOC, which once again stressed the stringent rules around the Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n

"We would urge and ask everyone to obey the rules, whatever stakeholder you are," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.<\/p>\n

"It is not a nice to have, it is a must have, both for the sports and for everyone involved.<\/p>\n

"It sends a strong message so please follow the playbooks.<\/p>\n

"We understand there is excitement and we feel for the athletes but unfortunately we have had to make the rules stricter.<\/p>\n

"These messages are constantly passed, not just to athletes.<\/p>\n

"It is in our interests and the interests of everyone."<\/p>\n
