Japan's Yuto Horigome has won the first-ever skateboarding competition at the Olympic Games<\/a>, taking gold in the men's street category in the city where he learned to skate as a kid and where his sport is often frowned upon.<\/p>\n

The first ever skateboarding silver went to Brazilian Kelvin Hoefler, who used to sleep with his board when he fell in love with skating as a kid.<\/p>\n

Jagger Eaton took bronze, the Arizonan adapting best among the Americans to the heat at the Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

One of skateboarding's biggest stars, Nyjah Huston from the US, fell repeatedly trying to land tricks and placed seventh in the eight-man final.<\/p>\n

Horigome, the world number two, has enjoyed a string of big wins over the past couple of years since moving from Japan to Los Angeles as a teenager, including the Street World Championships in Rome earlier this year.<\/p>\n

In a nail-biting final in Tokyo, Horigome stumbled through the two initial runs, but recovered to land four of the five final tricks, earning 9.50 in his second-last run.<\/p>\n

After his win, Horigome said the Games were a culmination of years of work.<\/p>\n

"I know it's simple but I'm really happy," he said.<\/p>\n

"I was stressing out inside, but I was able to turn it around with my best tricks."<\/p>\n

It was the host nation's third gold of the Games so far, after Naohisa Takato won the men's 60kg judo yesterday, and swimmer Yui Ohashi finished first in the women's 400m individual medley this morning.<\/p>\n
