The Kookaburras have survived an almighty scare against world No.15-ranked Japan in their Pool A Olympics<\/a> opener today.<\/p>\n

The Australian men's hockey team, the current world No.1, got off to a flying start this morning with goals from Tim Brand and Tom Craig to go up 2-0 before things took a turn for the worst.<\/p>\n

A six-minute blitz by the host nation stunned the Aussies, with Japan taking a 3-2 lead at the main break, courtesy of two goals from Kenta Tanaka and one from Yoshiki Kirishita.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for the Aussies, they responded swiftly when Blake Govers nailed the equaliser before goals to skipper Aren Zalewski and Daniel Beale sealed victory for the Kookaburras.<\/p>\n

The Kookaburras are out to redeem themselves after crashing out at the quarter-final stage at the Rio 2016 Olympics, in which the Australian men's team missed out on an Olympic medal for the first time since 1988.<\/p>\n

The Aussie gold medal favourites will take on India tomorrow from 7.30pm (AEST).<\/p>\n
