The world was made to wait an extra year to witness Tokyo's opening ceremony<\/a> – and when it finally arrived, thousands around the globe were left baffled.<\/p>\n

The order in which countries marched into the city's Olympic<\/a> Stadium was organised by the Japanese alphabetic order.<\/p>\n

That meant that Australia, led by flag-bearers Cate Campbell<\/a> and Patty Mills<\/a>, didn't emerge in the venue until 37 countries had already entered.<\/p>\n

Australia's Olympic athletes are used to the order of the opening ceremony hinging on the English alphabet, but such is the Japanese alphabet that Australia appeared between El Salvador and Austria.<\/p>\n

"Why was 'I' before 'A' in the countries entering the stadium?" posted Nine sports reporter Michael Atkinson on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Veteran AFL writer Neil Cordy wrote: "Still coming to terms with the Japanese alphabet."<\/p>\n

ESPNcricinfo's Paul Muchmore wrote: "Usually love guessing what country is the next to come out in the Olympic opening ceremony – not knowing the Japanese alphabet is making that a very hard task!"<\/p>\n

Australian comedian Titus O'Reily said: "The Japanese alphabet remains as big a mystery to me as when this parade started several years ago."<\/p>\n

And Australian sports presenter Tom Chadwick asked: "Can any of my learned friends explain the alphabet order here? As confusing as the stuff we saw earlier."<\/p>\n
